There are a number of factors to consider around data use when using a mobile data SIM that become much more obvious than when using traditional wired services. Below are included several articles and items to consider to ensure that your data goes as far as it can.
General Habits
Typically, general habits including; email, general web browsing, and social media can be considered quite light use. Over a month of fair use of these types of services will accumulate to around 1GB of data usage. For a lot of customers they find this to be quite manageable. We do often find, and do appreciate, that customers also like to take with them on travels other services including media streaming services, video streaming services especially. For these types of services there are some further items to consider below.
Video Streaming
Video streaming services can use large amounts of data in a short period of time. Several GB can be used for a single film when viewing in HD or 4K quality. The majority of online streaming services will allow you to change the definition, quality, of the image to a lower setting. Standard Definition (SD) is considered to be 480p, low, or some other equivalent. Each media service you use will require individually setting as you browse to each.
For instance, if you visit YouTube and set the quality to 480p. Then subsequently visit BBC iPlayer, you will also be required to change the video definition or quality there too.
Background Data Usage
To further reduce usage and ensure your data goes as far as it can, other consideration should be made to how data is used. Often our phones, tablets, laptops, and other devices when connected to an internet enabled gateway, for example a router, will attempt to contact various services in the background. Operating system updates for devices can use large chunks of data without ensuring these are disabled before using your mobile data.
The following article covers some devices, and may help to prompt how to think about what else is being connected and using your mobile data.

Data Saver Mode
We do also offer services that will help to mitigate usage by and optional 'Data Saver' mode that will assist in throttling the connection so as not to much data can be used in a short period of time. It is strongly recommended that this is enabled, it has little to no impact on use and helps to ensure that your data is protected for your use.
This article details how to enable this option.

We find that a lot of queries around data usage are often found to be unexpected devices using data, or services enabled that were not expected to be, and more often than not.. good old television streaming.
